Google released the August 2024 Core Update on August 15, 2024. It was completed 19 days later, on September 3, 2024.
However, Google also experienced an unrelated ranking issue on August 15, 2024, the same day it released the August 2024 Core Update. The ranking issue was resolved on August 20, 2024.
Google’s Official Announcement
Google announced the August 2024 Core Update in a post on X (formerly Twitter). In the post, Google mentioned that the update aims to prioritize helpful content while reducing the visibility of content designed solely to rank in search results.
Today we released the August 2024 core update. It continues our work to improve the quality of our search results by showing more content that people find genuinely useful and less content that feels like it was made just to perform well on Search.https://t.co/T6Qt0JUoWt
— Google Search Central (@googlesearchc) August 15, 2024
In addition to X, Google also announced the update in a post on LinkedIn and on its own official blog. In the blog post, Google mentioned that it took the feedback it had received from other creators over the past few months into account when it created this update.
What Are People Saying?
Barry Schwartz commented about the update on X (formerly Twitter). Curiously, he had previously posted about the volatility he detected on Google search results pages a day before Google released the August 2024 Core Update.
Shocking – we had a Google core update today – https://t.co/2OqEQT2BTc https://t.co/gyfGGQN14d

Glenn Gabe provided more insights into the update on X. He mentioned that many sites affected by the September 2023 Helpful Content Update, famously codenamed HCU(X), had started to recover. And some of the sites began recovering a day before the August 2024 Core Update was released.
Good Morning Google Land! This is the first edition of "Core Update Notes" for the August 2024 core update. And man, are we starting off in an interesting way. First, Google announced a ranking issue last night impacting a "large number of search results". So, what I present now… pic.twitter.com/YKViu0ws5q
— Glenn Gabe (@glenngabe) August 16, 2024
Gabe also mentioned that many sites earned or lost traffic to the August 2024 Core Update. However, the loss or gains were quickly reversed. He speculated that this could be the result of a bug.
And the third part of the Aug 18th thread is what I would expect to see with the ranking bug. IMO I think Google has probably fixed that bug and is just waiting on more data to make sure all is ok. I don't know for sure, it's just my gut feeling. I found some sites that either… pic.twitter.com/x18yePObq8
— Glenn Gabe (@glenngabe) August 18, 2024
The bug Gabe referred to is the same ranking issue that lasted from August 15 to 20, 2024. Google said it was unrelated to the core update.
That said, other SEOs also observed several sites recovering with this core update. For example, Lily Ray shared a report about a site slowly recovering after losing traffic to the Helpful Content Update.
It's happening. pic.twitter.com/jYjpBtneKE
— Lily Ray 😏 (@lilyraynyc) August 18, 2024
Lily also shared analytic reports of another site that recovered by 590%. While this is nothing compared to its rankings before the Helpful Content Update, it is impressive, considering that it recovered that much traffic within a day.
Here's an HCU-impacted site surging +590% where it was two days ago.
It's still nothing compared to what they lost in the Helpful Content Update, but that's how core update recoveries work. They take weeks. It's been 24 hours. pic.twitter.com/oucv2VeMDe
— Lily Ray 😏 (@lilyraynyc) August 16, 2024
Lily also shared analytic reports of another site that recovered 2800% of their traffic within two days. Like other sites, its traffic reduced after the Helpful Content Update before flatlining after the March 2024 Core Update.
I've been wondering for a long time when we would finally see a chart like this.
If this growth trend continues in the days/weeks to come, it means we finally, officially have September 2023 Helpful Content Update recoveries happening. Like the one below.
For reference, this… pic.twitter.com/QxZLlV5wD9

Brandon Saltalamacchia, the founder of Retro Dodo, one of the sites affected by the Helpful Content Update, noted that they are slowly recovering with this update. However, the recovery is insignificant compared to the traffic they previously received from Google results pages. He speculated that Retro Dodo’s traffic loss would remain down for a while.
I'm all for it, and hope it continues but if we truthfully zoom out, it's still an absolute catastrophe still.
"Retro Dodo's traffic returns"
Absolutely not, we're still in the trenches and will be for a long time. The damage is done and the work continues. pic.twitter.com/WO74nRgmhW
— Brandon Saltalamacchia (@iambrandonsalt) August 19, 2024
Gisele Navarro, the managing editor of House Fresh, which also lost traffic to the September 2023 Helpful Content Update, confirmed that they were receiving traffic to some pages that previously ranked high on Google results pages. He added that other small sites in their space were also slowly recovering.
🫶 thank you, Aleyda! We checked this morning and other unfairly targeted small sites in our space are also seeing traffic growth 🙌
— Gisele Navarro (@ichbinGisele) August 19, 2024
However, while some sites were slowly recovering, others were losing traffic. For example, Lily Ray shared analytics reports of a site that lost huge traffic to the August 2024 Core Update despite ranking in the number one spot for a highly competitive keyword two weeks earlier.
From ranking #1 for "liver pain" last month to destroyed by a core update.
The crazy part is that this site ever made it to the #1 position in the first place. https://t.co/T55TEsYMr4 pic.twitter.com/LtqPI4r2zR
— Lily Ray 😏 (@lilyraynyc) September 2, 2024
Interestingly, while some sites reported massive traffic loss or slight recoveries, Reddit saw its traffic increase by 300 Sistrix visibility points. This pales in comparison to the sites recovering from the Helpful Content Update, which typically saw their traffic increase by .5 to 2 points.
Reddit has now surged 300 @sistrix visibility points since the August 2024 core update started.
For context, for the HCU sites seeing increases, those increases are usually from .5 to 2 points. pic.twitter.com/WelpkLiFb2
— Lily Ray 😏 (@lilyraynyc) September 2, 2024
Nevertheless, it is noteworthy to know that this is the first time sites have been observed recovering from the Helpful Content Update.
And just to be clear, many HCU-affected sites appear to be down even more in the past 2 days.
I hope it's very clear that just because some sites can/will recover, not all will.
This one is down another -25% since the core update started two days ago. Spending even 5 seconds… pic.twitter.com/Voh98pyUmG

Barry Schwartz provided more insights after the August 2024 Core Update was completed on September 3, 2024. He mentioned that the update had mixed results. While a few sites completely recovered with this update, several others partly recovered, and most did not even see any improvement at all. Some even lost more traffic.
Google August 2024 core update is done – here is what we know
– Few saw full recoveries
– Some saw small recoveries
– Most saw nothing or even more hurt
Here are some of the facts, volatility charts and more from the SEO community on this update https://t.co/ZNkPG0eaac pic.twitter.com/lEEmkPlhAn— Barry Schwartz (@rustybrick) September 4, 2024
On September 4, 2024, Glenn Gabe replied to Barry’s post and noted that some sites were still gaining and losing traffic despite the update being completed.
Eager to see how much sites continue to surge or drop AFTER the update has completed. As of this morning, I'm still seeing movement in the same direction for a number of sites (including HCUX sites that started surging back, or dropping more). I'll be keeping a close eye on that… https://t.co/TmWc7bavOG

What’s Next – Dealing With This Update
While a minority of bloggers gained traffic to the August 2024 Core Update, others lost traffic, and many more did not see any changes. However, there are concerns that sites that saw little to no changes in their traffic situation may have been affected by some other update other than the September 2024 Core Update, which is also known as the Helpful Content Update or HCU(X).
In the meantime, you should begin monitoring your traffic with Rank Math Analytics. If you lost traffic to this update, you should refer to the video below on recovering from a Google algorithm update.
