What is an XML Sitemap?

An XML sitemap is a file that contains the links to the content (posts and pages), attachments (videos, images, and PDFs), and taxonomies (tags and categories) on a site.

Search engines crawl the XML sitemap to find the links to the files on your site. Your competitors may also crawl it as part of their attempt to understand your content strategy.

Generally, you should configure your XML sitemap to ensure it only contains the links you want search engines to find. If you don’t want a search engine to locate a webpage or file, do not include it in your XML sitemap.
