What is an Alt Text?
An alt text is a short description of the image on a webpage.
Also called alternative text, the alt text is displayed when the image cannot be displayed. This could happen if the internet connection is slow or the visitor disabled images on their browser.
The alt text is also essential for accessibility, as it allows visually impaired visitors to understand the images in the content. It is denoted by the alt attribute embedded inside an image tag <img alt="alt text here"/>.
According to World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) guidelines, a well-written alt text should be able to replace the image. The only exception occurs when you include the image for purely decorative reasons. In that case, W3C recommends leaving the alt text blank.
