If you encountered a Failed: Hostload exceeded error while inspecting your URL in Google Search Console, it means Google cannot crawl your URLs because it thinks it may overload your server.
Google uses several factors to estimate your server capacity and determine how much crawl budget to assign to your site. When Google uses up your crawl budget, it stops crawling your site.
In this knowledgebase article, we will show you how to fix the Failed: Hostload exceeded error and get Google to crawl your site.
Fixing the Page Fetch Error Failed: Hostload Exceeded Error
1 Limit Google’s Crawl Rate
Google provides you with options to reduce the rate (number of requests per second) at which it crawls your site. To do so, navigate to Search Console Site Settings and select the Limit Google’s maximum crawl rate option.
Once done, use the slider to select the rate you want Google to crawl your site. The closer it is to Low, the slower Google crawls your site.
For instance, if you set it to the highest, Google will crawl your site at the rate of 2 requests per second (120 requests per minute). As you drag the slider to the left, you can reduce the rate to 1 request per second (60 requests per minute).
Once you’ve set the rate, click the Save button, as shown below.

Note: You should gradually reduce the number of requests per second and find the right balance of crawl rate and server load for your site.
2 Improve Your Page Speed
Google will reduce your crawl budget if your site is slow. To confirm your current page speed, navigate to PageSpeed Insights and paste your URL into the textbox. Once done, click Analyze, as shown below.

You will be presented with data about your page speed. You can click on Expand view to receive more insights into your page speed.

You can scroll down to the OPPORTUNITIES section and look for suggestions to improve your page speed.
