Rank Math PRO is built on top of the free version to keep the plugins robust and lightweight. You’ll need both of them to be installed and activated at the same time so that the PRO version will work.
In this knowledgebase article, we’ll look at how Rank Math free and PRO versions are used all together on your website.
Upgrading Rank Math
If you’ve recently purchased our Rank Math PRO membership, you can download your Rank Math PRO plugin zip file from your account area to your computer.
Before your install the Rank Math PRO version, you’ll need to ensure that the Rank Math free version is installed on your website; only then you’ll be able to activate and use Rank Math PRO.
If you haven’t installed the Rank Math Free version yet, head over to the WordPress Dashboard → Plugins → Add New and search for Rank Math. Click the Install Now button, and once the plugin is installed, click on the Activate button to activate the plugin.
Now, to install the PRO version, navigate to WordPress Dashboard → Plugins → Add New. Click on Upload Plugin. And choose the Rank Math PRO zip file you’ve downloaded and click Install Now. Once the plugin is installed, click the Activate now link.
To activate your Rank Math PRO license, head over to the WordPress Dashboard → Rank Math SEO → Dashboard → Help and click on Connect Now to activate your Rank Math plugin.
You’ll be prompted to connect your Rank Math account to activate your license. If your Rank Math account is connected with multiple subscriptions (PRO, Business, Agency), then you can choose the correct license from the drop-down as shown below. Then click Ok, ACTIVATE NOW button.
Now your Rank Math PRO license will be activated on your website.
After your install and activate your Rank Math PRO version, you can notice that the Rank Math PRO features are unlocked in your existing Rank Math Dashboard. You can enable these PRO modules and start using them on your website.

Deactivating Rank Math
If you deactivate the free version, Rank Math PRO will also be deactivated, and you’ll have to activate both of them again. You can activate both versions from the Plugins → Installed Plugins section.
Updating Rank Math
Similarly, whenever a new update is available for Rank Math, you’ll have to update the free version first. Only after you update the free version of Rank Math you’ll be able to update the Rank Math PRO version.
Deleting Rank Math Free Version
Deleting the free version is not a good idea once you’ve installed Rank Math PRO. You need both versions of the plugin in order for them to work.
