What is Webspam?
Webspam refers to any content created to manipulate search engine rankings. It is also called spamdexing or black hat SEO.
Webspam typically involves black hat SEO tactics like cloaking, hidden text, hidden links, keyword stuffing, doorway pages, and link schemes. As a result, it violates search engine guidelines and could cause Google to demote the rankings or deindex the site on which it is published.
Google continuously improves its algorithm and systems to identify webspam. It has several teams and an algorithm called SpamBrain dedicated to identifying webspam. It has also released algorithm updates to combat webspam. This includes the Google Penguin Algorithm update, which demoted the rankings of sites engaged in webspam.
