What is a Content Delivery Network?

A content delivery network, content distribution network, or CDN, is a group of servers that help visitors access web content quickly.

Typically, to access content on the internet, a browser or web app needs to connect directly to the server where the content is located. However, there may be some delay if the server is located in a faraway location.

To speed things up, content delivery networks store the copy of web content on servers close to the visitor.

This process is called caching. When a visitor requests access to the content, the content delivery network delivers it from one of those servers.
