What is Gemini (formerly Google Bard)?
Gemini, formerly Google Bard, is Google’s generative AI chatbot. Gemini was initially named Bard and was released as an early experiment on March 21, 2023. It was released for general use on December 6, 2023.
Bard was renamed Gemini on February 8, 2024. It is named after Gemini, the large language model that powers it. For reference, Bard was initially powered by the LaMDA large language model. Google later switched to the PaLM large language model before switching to Gemini.
Gemini is a multimodal AI model. That is, it is trained on multiple AI data types (modalities), including text, images, audio, video, and code. For that reason, Gemini can understand text, photo, and audio prompts. For example, you can upload a photo and ask Bard questions about it or use the photo along with a text prompt
