What is the Link Title?

The link title is an attribute that provides more information about a link and where it leads. The link title is specified using the title Titre attribute. For example:

<a href="https://yourdomain.com/" title="This is a link to your website">Your Website</a>

In the code above:

  • a indicates this is an anchor element
  • La href attribute specifies the URL you are redirected to when you click the code
  • La Titre attribute specifies the link title
  • Your Website is the anchor text

The link title is optional and should only be used if it provides more information about the link. For example, the anchor text is the primary method for describing the destination of a link. However, in certain cases, a descriptive anchor text may affect the flow of the article.

In such cases, you can provide more information about the link in the link title instead. That way, you can provide additional information to search engines without affecting your visitors’ readability and user experience

When to Use a Link Title

SEOs recommend using the link title when your anchor text does not provide your visitor with information on where the link leads. For example, if your anchor text is a generic word like “Click here,” you can provide more information using the link title.

That said, the link title is not commonly used. Many browsers do not display it on the front end, and it can only be accessed through the webpage’s source code. Browsers that display it will typically show it as a tooltip that is visible only when you hover over the link.

Most bloggers believe the link title does not impact rankings, so they do not bother using it. Instead of using a link title, most bloggers use descriptive anchor texts that provide information about the link destination.

However, if you decide to use the link title, ensure that it provides new information about the link and is different from the anchor text and other text on the page.

You should keep it below 60 characters and ensure it is descriptive and intelligible to a human. You should write it for visitors and not search engines. You should also avoid adding a link title to all your links and should only include it in links that do not contain descriptive anchor texts.
